An immensely successful play with Dunedin origins is Merton Hodge’s The wind and the rain. In the 1920s, Hodge (1903-1958) studied medicine at the University of Otago, where he was passionate about drama and became an active member of the University Dramatic Society. A play that he initially wrote for the Society was later transformed into The wind and the rain. It was a resounding success on stage in London’s West End and in New York’s Broadway, and toured the world.
